MAHATMA GANDHI CENTRAL UNIVERSITY 

Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU), is the central university located in Motihari, Bihar, India. MGCU has seven schools and 20 academic departments. This is the second Central University in Bihar after the Central University of South Bihar (CUSB).

Mahatma Gandhi Central University, established in the 2016, has operated with the seven schools and 20 Departments. The University courses in the streams of Science, Arts, Commerce, Management, and more. 

It offers thr B.Tech, B.Sc., BA, B.Com (Hons.), M.Tech, MA, MJMC, M.Com, and M.Sc., MBA, MSW, M.Lib.I.Sc., M.Phil, and Ph.D. programs. 

MGCU conducts its admissions on the basis of the GET and the MET entrance examinations conducted yearly. There are reservations made for the candidates from SC/ST/OBC categories. The Faculty members at the MGCU are well experienced and the highly qualified.

Governance

The university is governed by the rules set by the Central Universities Act, in 2009. The president of India is the visitor of the university. The chancellor is the ceremonial head of the university while the executive powers rest with the vice-chancellors. The court, the executive council, the academic council, the board of the studies and the finance committee are the administrative authorities of the university.

History:

The Central Universities (Amendment) Act, 2014 which received presidential assent on December 17, 2014, provided for the establishment of the Mahatma Gandhi Central University having its territorial jurisdiction extending to the territory in the North of the River Ganges in the State of the Bihar. 

Activism and controversy:

In 2017, the university terminated two assistant professors without the citing any prior notice, which caused heavy protest by the students of the university. In June 2018, candidates of the university launched heavy protest after the university increased fees. Later that month, faculty members sat on the hunger strike after the university issued a show cause notice to the professor. 

In August 2018, Sanjay kumar, an assistant professor of the university, was attacked for the criticising Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the Facebook post. This led to the closure of the university for the 15-day period. 

In October 2018, the vice-chancellor of the university, Arvind Kumar Agrawal, was accused of the some anomalies in his educational qualifications. This led to his resignation the week later, and the appointment of the pro-chancellor Anil Kumar Rai for the position.

NOTE: The institute prefers entrance examination scores for admissions. However, due to the current pandemic situation, it accepts admissions by preparing a merit list based on the eligibility criteria i.e. merit in the last qualifying examinations.

Library

Atal Bihari Vajpayee Central Library (a learning resource centre) of the Mahatma Gandhi Central University was established in the year 2016. The university library has more than the 26000+ books, 13 magazines, 11 newspapers and 125+ donated book which providing access to the scholarly information, research support and study facilities to the teaching and non-teaching staff, candidates and research scholars.

Admissions are entrance based at the MGCU. Applications are accepted online commonly while applying for the CUCET. Other details have been given below: 

·         For all UG courses admission, candidates must qualify 10+2 exams in relevant streams and have a valid score in the CUCET.

·         M.Tech admission is based on the marks obtained in graduation and valid score in GATE or UGC-NET or SET or JEST.

·         M.Phil+Ph.D. admissions are based on the scores in the previous qualifying exam. Scores in UGC-NET or JRF or CUCET are accepted for direct shortlisting for interview.

·         Courses like MA, M.Com, M.Sc, MSW, MJMC and MBA accept scores in  the CUCET only and scores obtained in the previous qualifying examinations.
